Cracking the Code

The Caesar Cipher is a substitution cipher where each letter is replaced by a letter some fixed number of positions down the alphabet. To crack it quickly, look for the 'hooks'.

Look for single-letter words: they are almost always 'A' or 'I'.

Find frequent 3-letter words: 'THE', 'AND', and 'FOR' are common joke starters.

Check the punctuation: Apostrophes often precede 'S', 'T', or 'RE'.

Identify double letters: If you see 'EE' or 'OO' in a word, you're close to the key.

Use the 'Shift' method: Pick one word and try shifting it +1, +2, until it makes sense.

Since it's a joke, look for 'Why' or 'How' at the very beginning.
